Continuing Education Credits:

The CT State Board of Examiners of Environmental Professionals (LEP Board) has approved this course for 8.0 hours of continuing education credits - CTLEP-406(r).  The MA LSP Board has approved this course for 7.0 hours of Technical credits (LSP Course Number: 1560). 

Please note that this course was originally approved in CT for 7.5 hours of continuing education credits (CTLEP-406) and has recently been expanded and approved for 8.0 hours (CTLEP-406(r)). CT LEP course credit can only be claimed by an LEP for attendance of one version of this course. A CT LEP cannot repeat a course unless at least 2 biennial periods have passed. It is also important to note that anyone who took this course prior to the expansion of the agenda can only claim 7.5 CECs that were approved at the time the LEP took the course. Note this course was previously offered for 7.5 hours and cannot be taken for credit by those who claimed the earlier version.

Course Overview:

This hands-on one-day workshop will appeal to LEPs planning groundwater remedies and to engineers and environmental professionals who need an easy “non-modeling” way to calculate groundwater flow and aquifer response for a variety of common engineered systems, including extraction wells, collector trenches, slurry or sheet pile walls, permeable reactive barriers, and funnel and gate remedies.

Attendees will receive instruction and participate in a series of hands-on exercises. They will evaluate aquifer drawdown; optimize pumping well extraction rates; determine groundwater flow paths, velocities, and residence times; estimate system capture zone extent; create graphics with groundwater contours and pathlines; and examine other aspects of groundwater flow that should be considered when designing, evaluating and optimizing groundwater remediation systems. Attendees will be introduced to a set of “calculators” that have been developed with, and are run using the free AnAqSim EDU groundwater modeling software package. These calculators serve as easy to use screening tools that can be utilized to produce preliminary remediation designs, or to analyze existing remediation systems.

The course requires no previous modeling experience. A general knowledge of groundwater flow principles, and commonly applied groundwater remediation techniques and systems, is beneficial.

Computer Requirements:

Please bring a fully charged laptop running a Microsoft Windows-based operating system, on which you have installed the AnAqSimEDU Analytical Groundwater Modeling software. The free version of the software that will be used in the course can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:

and then selecting the "AnAqSimEDU (free, unlicensed)" file.

The software will run on both 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems and requires Microsoft .NET framework v4.0 or higher to be installed on your laptop. If Microsoft .NET framework is not already installed on your laptop, the AnAqSim installer will download and install the required version automatically.

Charging stations are available for all attendees.

Instructor Bios:

Charles McLane III, PhD, Principal, McLane Environmental LLC

Dr. Charles McLane is a Principal with McLane Environmental LLC in Princeton NJ where he specializes in quantitative hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, and chemical fate and transport in subsurface hydrologic systems for projects that include water resource evaluation and water supply permitting; wastewater management and disposal; conceptual site model development; and design and evaluation of groundwater remediation and hydraulic control systems. He has led short courses and training workshops for USEPA, National Ground Water Association, and other professional organizations. Dr. McLane holds a B.A. in Geology from Susquehanna University; an M.S. in Geology from the Earth Resources Department of Colorado State University, with a focus on watershed hydrologic processes; and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia, with a focus on hydrogeology and computer simulation techniques.

Mark Kauffman, Manager, McLane Environmental, LLC

Mr. Kauffman is a Manager at McLane Environmental with special expertise in hydrogeologic site investigations, analysis and interpretation of complex geospatial data, environmental forensic techniques, and ground water modeling. Mr. Kauffman has applied these techniques to interpret complex site data, and provide consulting support for projects including site engineering, regulatory compliance, and litigation support. Mr. Kauffman has managed and consulted on a number of projects, including visualization and analysis of site data to help guide remedial actions at DoD facilities; review of engineering plans for a proposed quarry site; water supply well field siting and permitting projects; ground water modeling projects to evaluate the fate and transport of contaminants; and matters involving insurance litigation, CERCLA cost allocation and Natural Resource Damages. Mr. Kauffman received his B.S. degree in Environmental Studies from Temple University, and has completed graduate work and has participated in continuing professional education on a variety of topics, including groundwater modeling, environmental forensics, and environmental regulations.

Jim Montague, McLane Environmental LLC

Jim Montague joined McLane Environmental in 2017 as a groundwater modeler. His work has focused on developing groundwater models using MODFLOW, MT3DMS, and AnAqSim for a variety of water supply projects and contaminant fate and transport models. Jim completed his PhD in Environmental Engineering at the University of Vermont in 2017 where he modeled density dependent flow and transport using OpenFOAM.
