The Environmental Professionals Organization of Connecticut (EPOC) is pleased to invite you to attend our annual dinner meeting at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT.  Our event begins at 5:00 PM with social time, followed by dinner, brief business meeting, and our keynote speakers from the USGS who will review the current PFAS background study being conducted in our state. The New England Air Museum is the largest aerospace museum in the region and houses over 100 aircraft and an extensive collection of engines, instruments, and artifacts in three large display hangars and an outdoor display area. Your dinner registration includes full admission to the museum. There will be time to view the exhibits starting at 5 PM.

Keynote Speakers - USGS Staff - A Multi-Media Investigation of PFAS In Shallow Soils, Groundwater, and Precipitation

Connecticut is undertaking a comprehensive, multi-media investigation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in shallow soils, groundwater, and precipitation to characterize statewide anthropogenic background concentrations and inform resource management and regulatory decisions. This presentation will outline the coordinated study design being implemented by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the State and with input from the Environmental Professionals Organization of Connecticut. A randomized grid-based sampling network (n=100 grid cells) was designed for the shallow soil study to ensure statewide coverage of undeveloped natural landscapes. Groundwater wells are being installed at up to 30 soil sampling sites to quantify PFAS occurrence and variability under different hydrologic conditions. Additionally, a new monitoring effort has been initiated to measure PFAS concentrations in precipitation and to provide preliminary information on spatial patterns and temporal trends. Study approaches for all three media investigations as well as preliminary findings for the soil study will be discussed in the context of regional research, including a recent northern New England modeling study predicting anthropogenic background PFAS concentrations in shallow soil.
